PPE & containment setup
Crew dons full biohazard PPE: Tyvek suits, respirators, splash goggles, nitrile gloves, and rubber boots. Poly barriers isolate the affected zone with HEPA-filtered negative-air containment.
Water & solid extraction
Truck-mounted extractors remove standing black water; solids are removed manually into sealed, labeled biohazard bags for regulated disposal.
Non-salvageable material removal
Category 3 exposure means porous materials — drywall (12 inches above the visible water line), carpet, carpet padding, insulation, MDF cabinets, upholstered furniture — are cut back and disposed of as biohazardous waste.

All remaining surfaces are treated with EPA-registered disinfectants rated for the pathogen classes present. Concrete, tile, and structural framing are decontaminated before drying begins.
Structural drying & deodorization

How to document a sewage claim so it actually gets approved
Sewage claims are handled differently than clean water losses. Coverage often requires specific endorsements, and documentation is the difference between a paid claim and a denied one.
Six documentation steps that protect a sewage claim
- Photograph the source (backup point, overflow fixture) before anything is touched.
- Video walk-through of every affected room, including close-ups of damaged personal property.
- Save any receipts or invoices related to the sewer line — recent inspections, prior repairs, plumbing calls.
- Call your carrier immediately and get a claim number in writing, then note the adjuster's name and direct phone.
- Do not throw away non-salvageable items until the adjuster (or your restoration company on their behalf) documents them.
- Ask specifically whether your policy includes sewer backup coverage — it's often an endorsement, not automatic.
